Hard Hats on: Cathedral Square Earthworks Well Underway

Demolition has been completed, and the Cathedral Square development beside Bendigo’s Sacred Heart Cathedral is now officially on course.

The Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst is transforming the once-vacant corner of Short and High streets into a vibrant precinct, blending sustainable architecture, landscaped public spaces, modern offices, and a flagship tourism tenant. The precinct is set to become a hub of activity and a new drawcard for visitors to the Cathedral area.

Diocesan Administrator, Fr Brian Boyle recently visited the site to check on progress — a rare inspection from someone better known for pastoral duties than hard hats and construction tape, much to the respectful amusement of the builders.

Acting Business Manager, Greg Westbrook said the project continues to stay on schedule, with demolition complete and earthworks for the new building foundations are well underway for the next stage of construction. Once complete, the development will include office space for Diocesan and Catholic Education staff, a new parish hall, landscaped community areas, and a flagship chocolatier to bring jobs and activity to the precinct.

Local leaders say the project is an exciting milestone in the ongoing revitalisation of Bendigo’s Cathedral precinct, combining respect for the city’s historic landmark with a vision for its future.
